Dental crowns often play an integral role in preserving natural teeth and helping patients maintain good oral health while also creating beautiful smiles. Whether you need a dental crown to save a compromised tooth or to improve the look of your smile, Dr. Sinclair simplifies and expedites the treatment process with state-of-the-art same-day CEREC technology. Â
What Is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a hollow, tooth-shaped dental restoration. Dental crowns are made of natural-looking, tooth-colored porcelain and are designed to fit over the entire portion of a natural tooth that is exposed above the gum line. Â
The Purpose of a Dental Crown: Why You Might Need a Dental Crown
Restorative Treatment
Dental crowns seal, protect, and support the structure of a natural tooth to help avoid the need for tooth extraction when a tooth has been compromised due to injury, decay, disease, excessive wear, or age. Dental crowns help to prevent the interior of the tooth from becoming infected. They can also support a tooth following a root canal procedure. Â
Cosmetic Treatment
In addition to restorative treatments, dental crowns also offer cosmetic benefits. For example, they can be used to brighten smiles, cover up permanent stains or discoloration, improve the symmetry and balance of a smile, correct the size or shape of an irregular-looking tooth, fill in gaps between teeth, or hide other imperfections. Â
How Same-Day CEREC Crowns Are Different
The traditional dental crown treatment process used to involve multiple appointments, required the use of sticky manual dental impressions, and required patients to wear a plastic temporary crown while waiting for an external dental laboratory to manufacture their permanent dental restoration. Â
The CEREC Difference
Thanks to same-day CEREC (chairside restoration of esthetic ceramic) technology, our dental crown treatment process looks much different. CEREC technology uses computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing technology to design and create custom, high-quality dental crowns right inside our office during a single appointment.
We begin by preparing the patient's tooth for a dental crown. We then collect digital dental impressions using a three-dimensional intraoral scanner. These images are uploaded into powerful design software where we design a custom dental crown that will look natural and complement the patient's smile. Our in-office precision milling machine then manufactures the dental crown and we place it for a perfect, long-lasting fit. Â
